What umpires say and do reflect their attitude towards umpiring. The umpire's professionalism will have him reflect on his performance and therefore improve his skills and judgment so that mistakes are kept to a minimum. If a mistake is made it is imperative that umpires keep calm and dignified and not discuss matters of judgment. The umpire is bound by the Laws and Rules, but where they are not clear he must understand the intention of the lawmakers and be able to resort to established precedents and to common sense. He must obtain and maintain his knowledge by constant revision. To do so the umpire must know and be able to apply those Laws and Rules. ![]() The umpire must ensure that the conduct of the game proceeds strictly in accordance with the Laws and Rules.
